The chimney is one of the most underestimated parts of a residence. A Home’s chimney tends to not receive the care or the concern usually given other concerning household systems. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most occupants assume them to be. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions & freed up masonry products all present a problem to residents.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to imperfectly lined chimneys.
Many of masonry chimney products (except for genuine stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water.
While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone rightly.
Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a homeowner should employ to prevent water penetration and leaks to the chimney.
Defective mortar joints or the use of incorrect mortar or brick can greatly increase the tendency to absorb and move water to the interior of the masonry chimney.

One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most steep leaks. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call us for an estimate now! Every chimney specialist knows that a safe chimney cap is a must.
Many chimney caps today are built from aluminum, galvanized steel or decorative metals.
In especially windy areas chimneys also could prevent downdrafts by blocking crosswinds from entering the chimney.
Chimney dampers may help prevent water penetrations, heat loss & keep you warm & saving you money.
When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap & with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire.
Sometimes it’s hard to believe how persistent animals & birds can be over the summer crafting a wonderfully cozy nest right inside your chimney.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all can suffer rust & deterioration. Chimney liner tiles & mortar can crumble and crack, leading to serious leaks. The chimney cap cover deflects rain & the side mesh prevents pests & leaves from entering. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard can slow wear-and-tear on your chimney & lining, saving you from costly repairs.
Our chimney repair & installation technicians are knowledgeable about many types of chimney caps, guards and dampers.
Water causes more leaks than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & wears away the mortar. It’s a common problem: raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their house in your chimney.
Chimneys may block correct ventilation & even allow pests to enter your home, potentially spreading disease & causing havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out!
Your fireplace may send sparks onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks may be stopped by the mesh cover that is a component of all our chimney caps.
The method recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic, or metal liner.” Thermocrete has UL Listing and is approved for gas and oil.
It conforms to any chimney size and shape, becoming a corrosion-proof, flame- and heat-resistant, airtight system with steel-like rigidity. A stainless steel liner locks in moisture and gases, keeping them out of your home.
This alloy resists acids from gas appliances and extreme temperature cycles.
Chimney liners serve three main functions. NBS tests showed that unlined chimneys let heat move so quickly that adjacent woodwork caught fire within 3½ hours.
If flue gases penetrate brick & mortar, the chimney’s lifespan is drastically reduced. Liners also provide a correctly-sized flue for efficient appliance performance.
The chimney not only vents combustion products but also supplies draft for combustion air. An incorrectly-sized liner may cause creosote buildup in wood stoves & increase carbon monoxide risks.
Our mission is to provide recommendations that can improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance and venting system.
Chimneys should be cleaned when soot & creosote accumulations approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Glaze build-up over 1/8 inch can be removed. Our pros employ multiple cleaning systems to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney requires attention.
Several of the common chimney cleaning methods we provide include:
Standard Sweep. This is the normal cleaning method & uses brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well-filtered vacuum prevents soot and creosote from entering the property. This cleaning is effective for soot and light creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze build-up.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning uses wire brushes, plastic cables, or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. It is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In rare cases where it’s impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical methods, chemicals may be used to loosen & dissolve heavy deposits.
A thorough chimney sweep can remove soot, creosote & blockages from the flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases may be removed, repaired, or relined with a UL-listed liner system or other approved product that might resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures proper for the class of the chimney project.
Chemical Cleaning: This calls for two trips — sometimes three if necessary. Our chimney masons will usually complete the job in a couple of hours and ensure your residence stays clean and undisturbed. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess,” top-notch service with minimal interruption to the owner.
