The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted features of a structure. The chimney tends to not receive the thought or the concern usually accorded other leaking household systems. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather will be a potential safety hazard. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions and loose masonry materials all present a problem to homes.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to incorrectly lined chimneys. Hundreds of masonry chimney products (except for real stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. A stone chimney acts and seems to be like a brick chimney and it might also be protected from the effects of water penetration. Chimney caps have long been recognized as an important chimney safety and leak-prevention part. Common brick is like a sponge, absorbing water and wicking moisture to the chimney interior. Caps and dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which could ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. For a metal, brick or fabricated chimney repair inspection call or text Expressway at 631.388.7555.
One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most inordinate problems. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney mason knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes and materials. Chimney caps also come with spark shields to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. Our chimney craftsmen will recommend the best solution for your chimney. When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire. It is sometimes hard to think how industrious animals and birds might be over the summer crafting a wonderfully cozy nest right inside your chimney.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all could suffer rust and deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar could crumble and crack leading to pivotal damage. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard will slow down wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, potentially saving you from large repair fees.
Our masons might be happy to come out and make a recommendation for you and provide a written estimate to install a new chimney cap, chimney damper or guard on your chimney. Water starts more leaks than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and erodes at the mortar. It’s such a common dilemma , raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their home in your chimney. Chimneys can block the right ventilation and even enter your residence, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids may keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace may spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks could be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney might depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it is an approved liner for gas and oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue and steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air and water tight.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your house is safer for yourself and your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. In the NBS tests, unlined chimneys allowed heat to move through the chimney so rapidly that the adjacent woodwork caught fire in only 3 1/2 hours. The flue gases are acidic in nature and literally eat away at the mortar joints from inside the chimney. As the mortar joints weather, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles and dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide might leak into the living areas of the structure. A chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. Our main role is to remove flue deposits and evaluate the total condition of the chimney system.
The required cleaning frequency can depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel and the burning habits of the customer. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze more than 1/8 inch will be removed. We employ several cleaning practices to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney estimates are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of repairs.
Several of the usual chimney cleaning techniques that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the structure. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are almost never the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney can remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases might be either removed and replaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that might resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature correct to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This needs two visits – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney pros can usually be done in less couple of hours and might make sure your residence does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our pros pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to a homeowner.
