The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted things of a residence. The fact that chimneys will do their job perfectly, even when overlooked, contributes to this thought that ‘it’s probably fine’. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather may be a potential safety hazard. Regular chimney maintenance is paramount to prevent problems, deterioration and future troublesome, high-cost chimney repairs.
Shodily lined chimneys can cause a number of immoderate structural and cosmetic issues for the homeowner and also create potentially pivotal safety hazards. Expressway repairs problems to all parts of your fireplace or chimney. Whether a client wishes for a chimney repointing, chimney repairs to missing or loose bricks, repair of a leaking chimney crown, broken flue liner or other chimney problem. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone correctly. Quite a bit of masonry products are porous and might absorb large amounts of water. Installing chimney caps and dampers may protect your chimney and maintain a safe chimney damper. Caps and dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which may ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that might prevent some of the most expensive leaks. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call us for an estimate now! Every chimney mason knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Most chimney caps are made from copper or stainless steel. In especially windy areas chimneys also will prevent downdrafts by blocking crosswinds from entering the chimney. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open and close. When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire. These blockages can cause fire hazards and smoke back drafting into the property.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all may suffer rust and deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar could crumble and crack leading to pivotal damage. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, right chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our chimney repair and installation pros are very knowledgeable about a large variety of types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water initiates more harm than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and eats away at the mortar. It’s such a common dilemma , raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their residence in your chimney. Chimneys will block the right ventilation and even enter your home, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids might keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace can spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks may be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney could depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it’s an approved liner for gas and oil. It conforms to any shape, size and length of the chimney and become a non-destructive chimney lining system which is corrosion-proof, flame and heat resistant, airtight liner with a rigidity of a steel. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture and flue gases in your chimney and keeps them out of your property.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your house is safer for yourself and your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a correctly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a properly-sized flue to perform exactly. Our obvious role is to remove flue deposits and evaluate the total condition of the chimney system.
The required cleaning frequency can depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel and the burning habits of the property owner. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in addition to 1/8 inch will be removed. Our experts employ several cleaning plans to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney estimates are the only way to know when the chimney requires repairs.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning methods that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the structure. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it’s impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are rarely the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney should remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases could be either removed and replaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that may resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature appropriate to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two trips – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney experts may usually be done in less couple of hours and may make sure your home does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. We pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to an owner.
