The chimney is one of the most under appreciated things of a home. The fact that chimneys can do their job well, even when damaged, contributes to this aura that ‘it’s probably fine’. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather might be a potential safety hazard. Damaged or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys can become soft, cracked or otherwise problematic – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control & contain the scary by-products of combustion.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to incorrectly lined chimneys. A lot of masonry chimney products (except for real stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. A stone chimney acts and appears like a brick chimney & it might also be protected from the effects of water penetration. Many of masonry materials are porous and may absorb large amounts of water. Common brick is like a sponge, absorbing water & wicking moisture to the chimney interior. Our experts could advise the owner in your own special situation what is best for you. For a metal, brick or fabricated chimney repair estimate call or text us at 631.388.7555.
One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most upscale leaks. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call us for an estimate now! Every chimney pro knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Most chimney caps are made from copper or stainless steel. In especially windy areas chimneys also could prevent downdrafts by blocking crosswinds from entering the chimney. Chimney dampers will help prevent water penetrations, heat loss and keep you warm and saving you money. When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire. Even just falling leaves may build up without the right chimney cap in place.
Rain is moisture & moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace & flue. Chimney liner tiles and mortar may crumble and crack leading to serious problems. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests & leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, proper chimney cleaning & maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our masons might be happy to come out & make a recommendation for you & provide a written estimate to install a new chimney cap, chimney damper or guard on your chimney. Water initiates more problems than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & erodes at the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues can protect you from costly repairs. Chimneys could block the right ventilation & even enter your house, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids might keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace might spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks could be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney can depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing & it’s an approved liner for gas and oil. It conforms to any shape, size and length of the chimney and become a non-destructive chimney lining system which is corrosion-proof, flame and heat resistant, airtight liner with a rigidity of a steel. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture & flue gases in your chimney & keeps them out of your structure.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your house is safer for yourself and your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. As the mortar joints wear away, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles & dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide could leak into the living areas of the home. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a properly-sized flue to perform exactly. An shodily-sized liner can lead to more creosote buildup in wood burning stoves & the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
Our objective is to provide recommendations that might improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance & venting system. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch may be removed. We employ multiple cleaning practices to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney needs to be addressed.
Several of the most common chimney cleaning practices that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the property. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it’s impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote & glaze deposits. These cases are almost never the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney can remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases can be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature appropriate to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This needs two visits – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney masons might usually be done in less couple of hours and may make sure your structure does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our pros pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch project by doing a great job with minimal interruption to a homeowner.
