The chimney is one of the most underestimated parts of a home. The fact that chimneys often do their job effectively, even when overlooked, contributes to this theory that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys perform several vital functions & their simple appearance misrepresents their complex construction & performance requirements. Harmful or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys may become soft, cracked or otherwise broken – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control & contain the life-threatening by-products of combustion.
Unprofessionally lined chimneys will cause a number of upscale structural & cosmetic problems for the consumer & also create potentially important safety hazards.
Masonry components deteriorate quickly when exposed to the extreme freeze/thaw processes of Glen Cove, in which moisture that has penetrated the products periodically freezes & expands causing undue stress.
Water in the chimney also initiates rust in steel and cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts.
Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a client may employ to prevent water penetration and complications to the chimney.
Defective mortar joints or the use of substandard mortar or brick likely greatly increase the tendency to absorb and deliver water to the interior of the masonry chimney.
Our pros only send fully-trained chimney cleaning fully-trained techs to your building that might live up to the guidelines of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) & the NCSG (National Chimney Sweeps Guild), the two regulatory organizations for the chimney industry in the United States.

One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that often prevent some of the most costly headaches. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney craftsmen knows that a safe chimney cap is a must.
Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes and products.
Some caps will actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design.
With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close, sealing tight when not in use.
When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire.
It is hard to realize how industrious animals & birds can be over the summer crafting a wonderfully cozy nest right inside your chimney.
Rain is moisture and moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace & flue. Chimney liner tiles & mortar may crumble & crack, leading to critical leaks. The chimney cap cover deflects rain and the side mesh prevents pests and leaves from entering. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard can slow wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, saving you from costly repairs.
Our chimney repair & installation technicians are knowledgeable about many types of chimney caps, guards and dampers.
Water starts more problems than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and wears away the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues can protect you from costly repairs.
Chimneys can block proper ventilation & even allow pests to enter your house, potentially spreading disease and causing havoc. Our strong mesh & lids will keep even the most determined animals out!
Your fireplace may send sparks onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks can be stopped by the mesh cover that is a component of all our chimney caps.
The method recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney with a durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has UL Listing & is approved for gas & oil.
A composite chimney lining system is inflated into the flue, then hardened with steam pressure, forming a tough liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air- & water-tight.
Stainless steel liners are UL tested under extreme conditions, including simulated chimney fires over 2100°F, so you’ll sleep soundly knowing your home is safer.
Chimney liners serve three main functions. NBS tests showed that unlined chimneys let heat move so quickly that adjacent woodwork caught fire within 3½ hours.
Flue gases are acidic and eat away at mortar joints from the inside. Liners also provide a correctly-sized flue for efficient appliance performance.
The chimney not only vents combustion products but also supplies draft for combustion air. An incorrectly-sized liner may cause creosote buildup in wood stoves and increase carbon monoxide risks.
The required cleaning frequency might depend on use, type of installation, fuel, and burning habits of the customer.
Chimneys should be cleaned when soot & creosote accumulations approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Glaze build-up over 1/8 inch should be removed. Our technicians employ various cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney requires repairs.
Several of the typical chimney cleaning techniques we provide include:
Standard Sweep. This is the normal cleaning method and uses brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well-filtered vacuum prevents soot and creosote from entering the residence. This cleaning is effective for soot and light creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze build-up.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning uses wire brushes, plastic cables, or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. It is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In rare cases where it’s impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical methods, chemicals may be used to loosen & dissolve heavy deposits.
A thorough chimney sweep may remove soot, creosote and blockages from the flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases will be removed, repaired, or relined with a UL-listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures necessary for the class of the chimney service.
Chemical Cleaning: This calls for two visits — sometimes 3 if necessary. Our chimney experts will usually complete the job in a couple of hours & ensure your property stays clean and undisturbed. Our pros pride ourselves on “no mess,” top-notch service with minimal interruption to you.
