The chimney is one of the most useful elements of a structure. The chimney tends to not receive the attention or the concern usually accorded other alarming household systems. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most property owners assume them to be. Regular chimney maintenance is paramount to prevent weakening, deterioration and future expensive, high-cost chimney repairs.
The complication is that hundreds of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas and oil. A lot of masonry chimney materials (except for real stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. A stone chimney acts and can be like a brick chimney & it should also be protected from the effects of water penetration. Chimney caps have long been recognized as an important chimney safety & issue-prevention component. Defective mortar joints or the use of shoddy mortar or brick may greatly increase the tendency to absorb & carry water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Caps and dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which can ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that may prevent some of the most inordinate issues. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney pro knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes and products. Some caps will actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design. Chimney dampers could help prevent water penetrations, heat loss & keep you warm and saving you money. When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap & with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire. Even just falling leaves might build up without an appropriate chimney cap in place.
Rain is moisture & moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace & flue. Chimney liner tiles & mortar could crumble and crack leading to serious issues. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, correct chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our chimney repair & installation experts are very knowledgeable about a large variety of types of chimney caps, guards & dampers. Water initiates more damage than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & erodes at the mortar. It’s such a common issue , raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their residence in your chimney. Chimneys could block the correct ventilation and even enter your house, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids may keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace can spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks may be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney may depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic or metal liner. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing & it is an approved liner for gas & oil. It conforms to any shape, size and length of the chimney and become a non-destructive chimney lining system which is corrosion-proof, flame & heat resistant, airtight liner with a rigidity of a steel. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture and flue gases in your chimney and keeps them out of your home.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your home is safer for yourself and your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. In the NBS tests, unlined chimneys allowed heat to move through the chimney so rapidly that the adjacent woodwork caught fire in only 3 1/2 hours. The flue gases are acidic in nature and literally eat away at the mortar joints from inside the chimney. Liners provide a precisely-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. A chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. An erroneously-sized liner can lead to more creosote buildup in wood burning stoves and the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
The required cleaning frequency can depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel & the burning habits of the client. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze more than 1/8 inch might be removed. Our masons employ various cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney consultations are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of repairs.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning methods that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the residence. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are seldom the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney could remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases can be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that may resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature exact to the class of the chimney service.
Chemical cleaning: This calls for two trips – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney masons will usually be done in less couple of hours & will make sure your residence does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to a homeowner.
