The chimney is one of the most useful parts of a residence. Your chimney tends to not receive the redress or the concern usually accorded other worrisome household systems. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather may be a potential safety hazard. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions & broken masonry products all present a threat to homes.
Improperly lined chimneys may cause a number of ritzy structural and cosmetic worries for the customer and also create potentially serious safety hazards. Masonry materials deteriorate quickly when exposed to the extreme freeze/thaw processes of Mecox, in which moisture that has penetrated the materials periodically freezes & expands causing undue stress. Water in the chimney also causes rust in steel & cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts. Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a consumer could employ to prevent water penetration & complications to the chimney. Defective mortar joints or the use of incorrect mortar or brick can greatly increase the tendency to absorb & steer water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Our technicians will advise an owner in your own special situation what is best for you. For a metal, brick or fabricated chimney repair estimate call or text Expressway’s chimney experts at 631.388.7555.
One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most costly complications. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney mason knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Most chimney caps are made from copper or stainless steel. Some caps could actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design. Our chimney sweeps will recommend the best solution for your chimney. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat and seals out weather, insects, birds and animals. Even just falling leaves may build up without an appropriate chimney cap in place.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all can suffer rust and deterioration. Chimney liner tiles & mortar could crumble & crack leading to pivotal problems. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain & the side mesh areas prevent pests & leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, most apt chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our chimney repair & installation craftsmen are very knowledgeable about the many various types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water causes more damage than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & weathers at the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues might protect you from upscale repairs. Chimneys might block the correct ventilation & even enter your home, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace may spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks may be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney might depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it is an approved liner for gas and oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue and steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air & water tight.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your home is safer for yourself & your family. Liners in chimneys serve 3 main functions. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a properly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. A chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. An improperly-sized liner could lead to more creosote buildup in wood burning stoves and the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
Our goal is to provide recommendations that might improve the safety and efficiency of your appliance & venting system. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch can be removed. Our masons employ several cleaning plans to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney consultations are the only way to know when the chimney requires fixing.
Several of the most common chimney cleaning methods that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the structure. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it’s impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote & glaze deposits. These cases are rarely the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney could remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases can be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that may resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature correct to the class of the chimney project.
Chemical cleaning: This calls for two trips – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney sweeps could usually be done in less couple of hours and can make sure your structure does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our pros pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to the owner.
