The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted components of a residence. The fact that chimneys may do their job well, even when passed over, contributes to this misnomer that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most customers assume them to be. Regular chimney maintenance is essential to prevent weakening, deterioration & future troublesome, high-cost chimney fixes.
The complication is that a lot of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas and oil. Masonry materials deteriorate quickly when exposed to the extreme freeze/thaw processes of Babylon, in which moisture that has penetrated the materials periodically freezes & expands causing undue stress. Water in the chimney also begins rust in steel & cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts. Lots of masonry products are porous & may absorb large amounts of water. Defective mortar joints or the use of incorrect mortar or brick could greatly increase the tendency to absorb and carry water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Our pros only send fully-trained chimney cleaning fully-trained techs to your house that will live up to the guidelines of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) & the NCSG (National Chimney Sweeps Guild), the two regulatory organizations for the chimney industry in the United States. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that might prevent some of the most immoderate damage. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call Babylon’s local roofing experts for an estimate now! Every chimney pro knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes and products. In especially windy areas chimneys also can prevent downdrafts by blocking crosswinds from entering the chimney. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat and seals out weather, insects, birds & animals. Even just falling leaves will build up without the latest chimney cap in place.
Rain is moisture & moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace & flue. Chimney liner tiles & mortar could crumble and crack leading to pivotal complications. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain & the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard could slow down wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, potentially saving you from large repair expenses.
Our chimney repair and installation craftsmen are very knowledgeable about a large variety of types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water begins more weakening than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & erodes at the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues may protect you from inordinate repairs. Chimneys can block the correct ventilation & even enter your structure, potentially spreading disease & wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace could spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks may be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it’s an approved liner for gas and oil. It conforms to any shape, size and length of the chimney & become a non-destructive chimney lining system which is corrosion-proof, flame & heat resistant, airtight liner with a rigidity of a steel. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture & flue gases in your chimney and keeps them out of your house.
This unique alloy is designed specifically to resist acids coming from gas appliances in the flue & extreme stresses of hot and cold cycles. Liners in chimneys serve 3 main functions. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. The flue gases are acidic in nature and literally eat away at the mortar joints from inside the chimney. As the mortar joints wear away, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles and dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide could leak into the living areas of the house. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a rightly-sized flue to perform correctly. An faulty-sized liner can lead to new creosote buildup in wood burning stoves and the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
The required cleaning frequency can depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel and the burning habits of the consumer. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze more than 1/8 inch can be removed. Our experts employ several cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney estimates are the only way to know when the chimney requires fixing.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning plans that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot & creosote from entering the home. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen & dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are almost never the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney will remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases should be either removed &replaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that may resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature proper to the class of the chimney service.
Chemical cleaning: This calls for two visits – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney technicians can usually be done in less couple of hours & may make sure your property does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. We pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch service by doing a great job with minimal interruption to you.
