The chimney is one of the most underestimated components of a dwelling. The fact that chimneys could do their job properly, even when discounted, contributes to this thought that ‘it’s probably fine’. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather could be a potential safety hazard. Adverse or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys can become soft, cracked or otherwise damaged – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control & contain the scary by-products of combustion.
The challenge is that a ton of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas & oil.
Masonry materials deteriorate quickly when exposed to the extreme freeze/thaw processes of Bridgehampton, in which moisture that has penetrated the materials periodically freezes and expands causing undue stress.
While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone correctly.
Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a householder will employ to prevent water penetration and problems to the chimney.
Defective mortar joints or the use of imperfect mortar or brick can greatly increase the tendency to absorb and guide water to the interior of the masonry chimney.
Our masons only send fully-trained chimney cleaning highly-skilled pros to your home that are able to live up to the guidelines of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) & the NCSG (National Chimney Sweeps Guild), the two regulatory organizations for the chimney industry in the United States.

One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that sometimes prevent some of the most immoderate headaches. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call our chimney pros for an estimate now! Every chimney expert knows that a safe chimney cap is a must.
Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes and metals.
Chimney caps also come with spark shields to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof.
Chimney dampers might help prevent water penetrations, heat loss & keep you warm and saving you money.
This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat & seals out weather, insects, birds & animals.
Even just falling leaves can build up without the latest chimney cap in place.
Rain is moisture and moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace and flue. Chimney liner tiles & mortar will crumble & crack, leading to critical issues. The chimney cap cover deflects rain & the side mesh prevents pests and leaves from entering. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard will slow wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, saving you from costly expenses.
Our technicians can come out and recommend the best option for you and provide a written estimate to install a new chimney cap, damper, or guard.
Water starts more issues than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and weathers the mortar. It’s a common issue: raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their home in your chimney.
Chimneys may block proper ventilation and even allow pests to enter your house, potentially spreading disease and causing havoc. Our strong mesh and lids will keep even the most determined animals out!
Your fireplace can send sparks onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks can be stopped by the mesh cover that is a component of all our chimney caps.
The method recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney with a durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has UL Listing and is approved for gas and oil.
It conforms to any chimney size and shape, becoming a corrosion-proof, flame- and heat-resistant, airtight system with steel-like rigidity. A stainless steel liner locks in moisture & gases, keeping them out of your home.
Stainless steel liners are UL tested under extreme conditions, including simulated chimney fires over 2100°F, so you’ll sleep soundly knowing your home is safer.
Chimney liners serve three main functions. NBS tests showed that unlined chimneys let heat move so quickly that adjacent woodwork caught fire within 3½ hours.
Flue gases are acidic and eat away at mortar joints from the inside. As mortar joints wear away, heat transfers more quickly to combustibles & gases like carbon monoxide may leak into the home.
Modern stoves and furnaces need a properly-sized flue to operate efficiently. An improperly-sized liner may cause creosote buildup in wood stoves & increase carbon monoxide risks.
The required cleaning frequency can depend on use, type of installation, fuel, & burning habits of the customer.
Chimneys should be cleaned when soot & creosote accumulations approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Glaze build-up in excess of 1/8 inch can be removed. Our pros employ various cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney consultations are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of repairs.
Several of the typical chimney cleaning methods we provide include:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard cleaning method and uses brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well-filtered vacuum prevents soot & creosote from entering the residence. This cleaning is effective for soot & light creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze build-up.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning uses wire brushes, plastic cables, or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. It is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In rare cases where it’s impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical methods, chemicals may be used to loosen & dissolve heavy deposits.
A thorough chimney sweep may remove soot, creosote & blockages from the flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases can be removed, repaired, or relined with a UL-listed liner system or other approved material that may resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures correct for the class of the chimney job.
Chemical Cleaning: This requires two trips — sometimes three if necessary. Our chimney experts can usually complete the job in a couple of hours & ensure your residence stays clean and undisturbed. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess,” top-notch job with minimal interruption to a homeowner.
