The chimney is one of the most overlooked structures of a structure. The fact that chimneys often do their job effectively, even when overlooked, contributes to this theory that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most homeowners assume them to be. Compromised or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys may become soft, cracked or otherwise non-functioning – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control & contain the hazardous by-products of combustion.
The concern is that a lot of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas & oil.
Hundreds of masonry chimney components (except for genuine stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water.
Water in the chimney also causes rust in steel & cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts.
Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a consumer may employ to prevent water penetration and weakening to the chimney.
Installing chimney caps & dampers often protect your chimney and maintain a safe chimney damper.

One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that often prevent some of the most high-priced damage. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call our trusted team for an estimate now! Every chimney sweep knows that a safe chimney cap is a must.
Most chimney caps are made from copper or stainless steel
Some caps can actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design.
With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close, sealing tight when not in use.
When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire.
Even just falling leaves sometimes build up without the correct chimney cap in place.
Rain is moisture & moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace and flue. Chimney liner tiles & mortar could crumble and crack, leading to serious issues. The chimney cap cover deflects rain and the side mesh prevents pests & leaves from entering. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard can slow wear-and-tear on your chimney & lining, saving you from costly repairs.
Our chimney repair & installation pros are knowledgeable about all kinds of chimney caps, guards & dampers.
Water starts more issues than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & wears away the mortar. It’s a common problem: raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their house in your chimney.
Chimneys may block correct ventilation & even allow pests to enter your house, potentially spreading disease & causing havoc. Our strong mesh and lids will keep even the most determined animals out!
Your fireplace may send sparks onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks can be stopped by the mesh cover that is a component of all our chimney caps.
The method recommended for your chimney may depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic, or metal liner.” A lining cleaning is cost-effective and ideal for fireplaces & chimneys serving gas, oil, wood, or coal appliances.
It conforms to any chimney size and shape, becoming a corrosion-proof, flame- and heat-resistant, airtight system with steel-like rigidity. A stainless steel chimney liner is air- & water-tight.
This alloy resists acids from gas appliances & extreme temperature cycles.
Chimney liners serve three main functions. NBS tests showed that unlined chimneys let heat move so quickly that adjacent woodwork caught fire within 3½ hours.
If flue gases penetrate brick and mortar, the chimney’s lifespan is drastically reduced. Liners also provide a correctly-sized flue for efficient appliance performance.
The chimney not only vents combustion products but also supplies draft for combustion air. An improperly-sized liner can cause creosote buildup in wood stoves & increase carbon monoxide risks.
The required cleaning frequency might depend on use, type of installation, fuel, & burning habits of the client.
Chimneys should be cleaned when soot and creosote accumulations approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Glaze build-up over 1/8 inch can be removed. We employ various cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney needs repairs.
Several of the typical chimney cleaning techniques we provide include:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard cleaning method & uses brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well-filtered vacuum prevents soot & creosote from entering the home. This cleaning is effective for soot and light creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze build-up.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning uses wire brushes, plastic cables, or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. It is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In rare cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical methods, chemicals may be used to loosen & dissolve heavy deposits.
A thorough chimney sweep can remove soot, creosote & blockages from the flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases could be removed, repaired, or relined with a UL-listed liner system or other approved material that may resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures correct for the class of the chimney job.
Chemical Cleaning: This needs two trips — sometimes three if necessary. Our chimney technicians can usually complete the job in a couple of hours and ensure your house stays clean and undisturbed. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess,” top-notch project with minimal interruption to you.
