The chimney is one of the most under appreciated features of a home. The fact that chimneys may do their job perfectly, even when passed over, contributes to this idea that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most people assume them to be. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions and freed up masonry materials all present a problem to residents.
The issue is that quite a bit of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas and oil. Expressway repairs leaks to all parts of your fireplace or chimney. Whether a client wants a chimney repointing, chimney repairs to missing or loose bricks, repair of a leaking chimney crown, broken flue liner or other chimney threat. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone rightly. Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a customer could employ to prevent water penetration & trouble to the chimney. Common brick is like a sponge, absorbing water & wicking moisture to the chimney interior. Caps & dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which could ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that will prevent some of the most costly problems. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call Calverton’s local roofing experts for an estimate now! Every chimney sweep knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. The job of the chimney cap is to stop rain from entering the flue & to stop pests from building nests in your chimney or using the chimney for a doorway into your property. In especially windy areas chimneys also will prevent downdrafts by blocking crosswinds from entering the chimney. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat & seals out weather, insects, birds & animals. These blockages can cause fire hazards & smoke back drafting into the house.
Metal fireboxes, liners & dampers all could suffer rust & deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar can crumble and crack leading to pivotal leaks. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain & the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. A rightly fitted chimney cap or guard may slow down wear-and-tear on your chimney & lining, potentially saving you from large repair fees.
Our chimney repair & installation craftsmen are very knowledgeable about the many various types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water initiates more damage than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and erodes at the mortar. It’s such a common problem , raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their property in your chimney. Chimneys can block the correct ventilation & even enter your property, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace may spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks will be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney could depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it is an approved liner for gas and oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue & steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air & water tight.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your home is safer for yourself & your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. In the NBS tests, unlined chimneys allowed heat to move through the chimney so rapidly that the adjacent woodwork caught fire in only 3 1/2 hours. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a properly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a rightly-sized flue to perform correctly. An faulty-sized liner may lead to extra creosote buildup in wood burning stoves & the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
The required cleaning frequency might depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel and the burning habits of the property owner. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in addition to 1/8 inch should be removed. Our masons employ a variety of cleaning systems to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney checks are the only way to know when the chimney requires to be fixed.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning techniques that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the structure. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it’s impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are rarely the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney should remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases may be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that can resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature correct to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This needs two visits – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney technicians may usually be done in less couple of hours and will make sure your home does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. We pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to the owner.
