The chimney is one of the most undervalued things of a structure. The fact that chimneys may do their job well, even when discounted, contributes to this misnomer that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys perform several pertinent functions & their simple appearance misrepresents their complex construction & performance requirements. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions & displaced masonry bricks all present a problem to homes.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to improperly lined chimneys.
Quite a bit of masonry chimney materials (except for true stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water.
While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone properly.
Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a consumer can employ to prevent water penetration & leaks to the chimney.
Defective mortar joints or the use of shoddy mortar or brick will greatly increase the tendency to absorb & move water to the interior of the masonry chimney.
Our specialists will advise a client in your own subjective situation what is best for you.

One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that might prevent some of the most expensive problems. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney technician knows that a safe chimney cap is a must.
Many chimney caps today are built from aluminum, galvanized steel or decorative metals.
Some caps can actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design.
With precision engineering this damper is easy to open and close, sealing tight when not in use.
This is the perfect upgrade for fireplace chimneys in older houses that rarely have a damper.
These blockages will cause fire hazards and smoke back drafting into the house.
Rain is moisture & moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace and flue. Chimney liner tiles and mortar may crumble and crack, leading to serious leaks. The chimney cap cover deflects rain and the side mesh prevents pests & leaves from entering. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard may slow wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, saving you from costly repairs.
Our chimney repair & installation technicians are knowledgeable about many types of chimney caps, guards & dampers.
Water causes more leaks than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & erodes the mortar. It’s a common issue: raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their home in your chimney.
Chimneys may block correct ventilation & even allow pests to enter your home, potentially spreading disease & causing havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out!
Your fireplace may send sparks onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks may be stopped by the mesh cover that is a component of all our chimney caps.
The method recommended for your chimney may depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic, or metal liner.” Thermocrete has UL Listing and is approved for gas and oil.
A composite chimney lining system is inflated into the flue, then hardened with steam pressure, forming a tough liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air- and water-tight.
Stainless steel liners are UL tested under extreme conditions, including simulated chimney fires over 2100°F, so you’ll sleep soundly knowing your home is safer.
The liner protects your house from heat transfer to nearby combustibles. NBS tests showed that unlined chimneys let heat move so quickly that adjacent woodwork caught fire within 3½ hours.
If flue gases penetrate brick and mortar, the chimney’s lifespan is drastically reduced. As mortar joints erode, heat transfers more quickly to combustibles and gases like carbon monoxide may leak into the home.
Modern stoves and furnaces need a correctly-sized flue to operate efficiently. An incorrectly-sized liner may cause creosote buildup in wood stoves & increase carbon monoxide risks.
Our goal is to provide recommendations that could improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance and venting system.
Chimneys should be cleaned when soot and creosote accumulations approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Glaze build-up in excess of 1/8 inch should be removed. We employ various cleaning methods to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney requires attention.
Several of the usual chimney cleaning practices we provide include:
Standard Sweep. This is the normal cleaning method and uses brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well-filtered vacuum prevents soot and creosote from entering the house. This cleaning is effective for soot & light creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze build-up.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning uses wire brushes, plastic cables, or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. It is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In rare cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical methods, chemicals may be used to loosen & dissolve heavy deposits.
A thorough chimney sweep will remove soot, creosote and blockages from the flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases could be removed, repaired, or relined with a UL-listed liner system or other approved product that will resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate for the class of the chimney service.
Chemical Cleaning: This requires two trips — sometimes three if necessary. Our chimney pros will usually complete the job in a couple of hours & ensure your home stays clean and undisturbed. We pride ourselves on “no mess,” top-notch service with minimal interruption to you.
