The chimney is one of the most under appreciated assets of a property. Any chimney tends to not receive the consideration or the concern usually accorded other worrisome household systems. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most customers assume them to be. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions and displaced masonry materials all present a risk to buildings.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to shodily lined chimneys.
Expressway repairs trouble to all parts of your fireplace or chimney. Whether a client requires a chimney repointing, chimney repairs to missing or loose bricks, repair of a leaking chimney crown, broken flue liner or other chimney problem.
Water in the chimney also begins rust in steel and cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts.
Numerous of masonry materials are porous and can absorb large amounts of water.
Installing chimney caps & dampers can protect your chimney and maintain a safe chimney damper.
Our masons often advise you in your own distinct situation what is best for you.

One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that might prevent some of the most hefty nightmares. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney contractor knows that a safe chimney cap is a must.
Many chimney caps today are built from aluminum, galvanized steel or decorative metals.
Some caps will actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design.
With precision engineering this damper is easy to open and close, sealing tight when not in use.
When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire.
It is hard to see how destructive animals and birds could be over the summer crafting a wonderfully cozy nest right inside your chimney.
Metal fireboxes, liners & dampers all could suffer rust and deterioration. Chimney liner tiles & mortar will crumble & crack, leading to serious damage. The chimney cap cover deflects rain & the side mesh prevents pests and leaves from entering. A properly fitted chimney cap or guard could slow wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, saving you from costly repairs.
Our chimney repair and installation technicians are knowledgeable about many types of chimney caps, guards and dampers.
Water causes more leaks than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and erodes the mortar. It’s a common issue: raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their home in your chimney.
Chimneys can block correct ventilation & even allow pests to enter your home, potentially spreading disease & causing havoc. Our strong mesh & lids will keep even the most determined animals out!
Your fireplace can send sparks onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks may be stopped by the mesh cover that is a part of all our chimney caps.
The method recommended for your chimney may depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic, or metal liner.” Thermocrete has UL Listing and is approved for gas and oil.
It conforms to any chimney size and shape, becoming a corrosion-proof, flame- and heat-resistant, airtight system with steel-like rigidity. A stainless steel chimney liner is air- & water-tight.
This alloy resists acids from gas appliances and extreme temperature cycles.
Chimney liners serve three main functions. NBS tests showed that unlined chimneys let heat move so quickly that adjacent woodwork caught fire within 3½ hours.
Flue gases are acidic and eat away at mortar joints from the inside. As mortar joints erode, heat transfers more quickly to combustibles & gases like carbon monoxide can leak into the house.
Modern stoves and furnaces need a correctly-sized flue to operate efficiently. Our main role is to remove flue deposits and evaluate the overall chimney system.
Our aim is to provide recommendations that could improve the safety and efficiency of your appliance & venting system.
Chimneys should be cleaned when soot and creosote accumulations approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Glaze build-up more than 1/8 inch can be removed. Our technicians employ several cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney estimates are the only way to know when the chimney needs maintenance.
Several of the common chimney cleaning techniques we provide include:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard cleaning method and uses brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well-filtered vacuum prevents soot and creosote from entering the residence. This cleaning is effective for soot & light creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze build-up.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning uses wire brushes, plastic cables, or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. It is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In rare cases where it’s impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical methods, chemicals may be used to loosen and dissolve heavy deposits.
A thorough chimney sweep will remove soot, creosote and blockages from the flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases will be removed, repaired, or relined with a UL-listed liner system or other approved product that may resist corrosion, softening, or cracking from flue gases at temperatures appropriate for the class of the chimney project.
Chemical Cleaning: This requires two trips — sometimes three if necessary. Our chimney masons can usually complete the job in a couple of hours & ensure your property stays clean and undisturbed. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess,” top-notch service with minimal interruption to the owner.
