The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted things of a home. The fact that chimneys could do their job well, even when ignored, contributes to this idea that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most people assume them to be. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions & freed up masonry products all present a complication to residents.
The complication is that a lot of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas & oil. Hundreds of masonry chimney products (except for authentic stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone precisely. A lot of masonry products are porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Defective mortar joints or the use of unsound mortar or brick may greatly increase the tendency to absorb & steer water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Caps and dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which can ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that might prevent some of the most inordinate harm. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Farmingdale’s local roofing experts for an estimate now! Every chimney expert knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Most chimney caps are made from copper or stainless steel. Chimney caps also come with spark mesh to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close. It’s the perfect upgrade for fireplace chimneys in older houses that hardly ever have a damper. Even just falling leaves may build up without the correct chimney cap in place.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all will suffer rust & deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar may crumble & crack leading to critical issues. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, correct chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our experts might be happy to come out and make a recommendation for you & provide a written estimate to install a new chimney cap, chimney damper or guard on your chimney. Water initiates more issues than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & wears away at the mortar. It’s such a common issue , raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their structure in your chimney. Chimneys can block the right ventilation & even enter your home, potentially spreading disease & wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids might keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace may spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks can be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney can depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic or metal liner. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it’s an approved liner for gas & oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue and steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture and flue gases in your chimney & keeps them out of your property.
This unique alloy is designed specifically to resist acids coming from gas appliances in the flue and extreme stresses of hot and cold cycles. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick & mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a rightly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. A chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a way out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. Our principal task is to remove flue deposits & evaluate the complete condition of the chimney system.
Our wish is to provide recommendations that could improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance and venting system. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot & creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch may be removed. We employ several cleaning practices to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney consultations are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of help.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning practices that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the house. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are seldom the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney may remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases could be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature appropriate to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two trips – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney sweeps might usually be done in less couple of hours and will make sure your property does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. We pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch project by doing a great job with minimal interruption to the owner.
