The chimney is one of the most under appreciated things of a property. The fact that chimneys can do their job perfectly, even when passed over, contributes to this theory that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys perform several vital functions and their simple appearance misrepresents their complex construction and performance requirements. Troublesome or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys may become soft, cracked or otherwise broken – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control and contain the serious by-products of combustion.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to erroneously lined chimneys. Hundreds of masonry chimney materials (except for genuine stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone exactly. Quite a bit of masonry materials are porous & may absorb large amounts of water. Defective mortar joints or the use of shoddy mortar or brick might greatly increase the tendency to absorb and transport water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Caps & dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which can ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most upscale leaks. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney craftsmen knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes & materials. In especially windy areas chimneys also will prevent downdrafts by blocking crosswinds from entering the chimney. Our chimney craftsmen could recommend the best solution for your chimney. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat and seals out weather, insects, birds & animals. Even just falling leaves will build up without an appropriate chimney cap in place.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all will suffer rust & deterioration. Chimney liner tiles & mortar could crumble and crack leading to critical complications. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests & leaves from entering the chimney. A rightly fitted chimney cap or guard will slow down wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, potentially saving you from large repair fees.
Our chimney repair and installation masons are very knowledgeable about the many various types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water begins more trouble than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & erodes at the mortar. It’s such a common dilemma , raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their residence in your chimney. Chimneys can block proper ventilation and even enter your house, potentially spreading disease & wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids may keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace could spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks could be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney could depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic or metal liner. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it’s an approved liner for gas and oil. It conforms to any shape, size and length of the chimney & become a non-destructive chimney lining system which is corrosion-proof, flame & heat resistant, airtight liner with a rigidity of a steel. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture & flue gases in your chimney & keeps them out of your structure.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your home is safer for yourself and your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. The flue gases are acidic in nature and literally eat away at the mortar joints from inside the chimney. As the mortar joints wear away, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles and dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide may leak into the living areas of the residence. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a properly-sized flue to perform properly. An improperly-sized liner can lead to extra creosote buildup in wood burning stoves and the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
The required cleaning frequency might depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel & the burning habits of the property owner. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot & creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in addition to 1/8 inch may be removed. We employ various cleaning techniques to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney estimates are the only way to know when the chimney requires help.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning practices that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the residence. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are hardly ever the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney may remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases could be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature proper to the class of the chimney project.
Chemical cleaning: This needs two visits – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney technicians will usually be done in less couple of hours & might make sure your structure does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our masons pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch project by doing a great job with minimal interruption to an owner.
