The chimney is one of the most useful components of a property. The chimney tends to not receive the thought or the concern usually afforded other leaking household systems. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather might be a potential safety hazard. Destructive or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys may become soft, cracked or otherwise damaged – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control and contain the serious by-products of combustion.
Inexactly lined chimneys may cause a number of ritzy structural & cosmetic issues for the consumer and also create potentially serious safety hazards. Expressway repairs harm to all parts of your fireplace or chimney. Whether a homeowner wants a chimney repointing, chimney repairs to missing or loose bricks, repair of a leaking chimney crown, broken flue liner or other chimney threat. A stone chimney acts & seems to be like a brick chimney & it can also be protected from the effects of water penetration. Quite a bit of masonry products are porous and could absorb large amounts of water. Defective mortar joints or the use of incorrect mortar or brick could greatly increase the tendency to absorb & convey water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Caps & dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which may ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most costly issues. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney sweep knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. The job of the chimney cap is to stop rain from entering the flue and to stop pests from building nests in your chimney or using the chimney for a doorway into your house. Chimney caps also come with spark shields to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close. It’s the perfect upgrade for fireplace chimneys in older houses that almost never have a damper. It is sometimes hard to believe how industrious animals & birds might be over the summer crafting a wonderfully cozy nest right inside your chimney.
Rain is moisture and moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace & flue. Chimney liner tiles and mortar may crumble and crack leading to pivotal damage. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests & leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, latest chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our chimney repair & installation craftsmen are very knowledgeable about all types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water initiates more problems than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & eats away at the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues can protect you from high-priced repairs. Chimneys might block proper ventilation and even enter your residence, potentially spreading disease & wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids can keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace could spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks might be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it is an approved liner for gas and oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue & steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air & water tight.
This unique alloy is designed specifically to resist acids coming from gas appliances in the flue and extreme stresses of hot and cold cycles. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick & mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a rightly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. A chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. An erroneously-sized liner will lead to additional creosote buildup in wood burning stoves & the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
The required cleaning frequency could depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel & the burning habits of the customer. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze more than 1/8 inch can be removed. Our masons employ several cleaning systems to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney checks are the only way to know when the chimney requires help.
Several of the usual chimney cleaning plans that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method and involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the property. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen & dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are rarely the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney could remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases could be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature correct to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two visits – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney experts can usually be done in less couple of hours and will make sure your house does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our experts pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to the owner.
