The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted elements of a house. The fact that chimneys will do their job perfectly, even when ignored, contributes to this aura that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys perform several pertinent functions & their simple appearance misrepresents their complex construction and performance requirements. Weakened or deteriorated flue liners of masonry chimneys could become soft, cracked or otherwise deteriorated – such that it/they no longer have the ability to control and contain the dangerous by-products of combustion.
The issue is that a lot of masonry chimneys were not designed to handle the venting requirements of modern high-efficiency heating appliances burning natural gas and oil. Masonry products deteriorate quickly when exposed to the extreme freeze/thaw processes of Mastic, in which moisture that has penetrated the materials periodically freezes & expands causing undue stress. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone exactly. Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a homeowner will employ to prevent water penetration and problems to the chimney. Installing chimney caps & dampers may protect your chimney & maintain a safe chimney damper. Caps & dampers keep out the weather, all animals & most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which could ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that could prevent some of the most upscale damage. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Mastic’s local roofing experts for an estimate now! Every chimney technician knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Most chimney caps are made from copper or stainless steel. Chimney caps also come with spark wire to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open and close. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat and seals out weather, insects, birds & animals. It is sometimes hard to think how industrious animals & birds may be over the summer crafting a wonderfully cozy nest right inside your chimney.
Metal fireboxes, liners & dampers all might suffer rust and deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar could crumble & crack leading to critical trouble. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, right chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our chimney repair & installation technicians are very knowledgeable about numerous types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water initiates more complications than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and eats away at the mortar. It’s such a common problem , raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their structure in your chimney. Chimneys may block proper ventilation & even enter your home, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace could spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks may be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing & it’s an approved liner for gas & oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue and steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture & flue gases in your chimney and keeps them out of your home.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your residence is safer for yourself & your family. Liners in chimneys serve 3 main functions. In the NBS tests, unlined chimneys allowed heat to move through the chimney so rapidly that the adjacent woodwork caught fire in only 3 1/2 hours. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a correctly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. Modern wood stoves and gas or oil furnaces require a properly-sized flue to perform correctly. Our principal role is to remove flue deposits and evaluate the total condition of the chimney system.
Our objective is to provide recommendations that will improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance and venting system. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot & creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch will be removed. We employ numerous cleaning systems to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney checks are the only way to know when the chimney requires to be fixed.
Several of the most common chimney cleaning methods that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot & creosote from entering the property. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen & dissolve heavy creosote & glaze deposits. These cases are rarely the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney could remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases could be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature proper to the class of the chimney job.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two visits – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney technicians might usually be done in less couple of hours and can make sure your house does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch service by doing a great job with minimal interruption to the owner.
