The chimney is one of the most under appreciated parts of a home. The fact that chimneys can do their job perfectly, even when ignored, contributes to this idea that ‘it’s probably fine’. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather may be a potential safety hazard. Regular chimney maintenance is paramount to prevent damage, deterioration and future expensive, high-cost chimney fixes.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to faulty lined chimneys. Quite a bit of masonry chimney materials (except for real stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. While most stone is not affected by water penetration, large amounts of mortar are required to bond the stone properly. Many of masonry products are porous & can absorb large amounts of water. Installing chimney caps & dampers can protect your chimney and maintain a safe chimney damper. Our technicians only send fully-trained chimney cleaning experts to your house that could live up to the guidelines of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) & the NCSG (National Chimney Sweeps Guild), the two regulatory organizations for the chimney industry in the United States. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that may prevent some of the most inordinate leaks. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call Expressway Roofing & Chimney for an estimate now! Every chimney craftsmen knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes and products. Chimney caps also come with spark wire to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open & close. When closed, the damper serves as a chimney cap and with a slight pull of the chain it releases the spring-loaded top into the open position when you’re ready to enjoy a nice fire. These blockages could cause fire hazards & smoke back drafting into the residence.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all could suffer rust & deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar may crumble and crack leading to critical damage. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain & the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, proper chimney cleaning & maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our chimney repair and installation masons are very knowledgeable about a large variety of types of chimney caps, guards & dampers. Water initiates more leaks than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & weathers at the mortar. It’s such a common issue , raccoons, squirrels, birds & bats try to make their structure in your chimney. Chimneys can block the right ventilation and even enter your structure, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids may keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace may spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable products. Stray sparks could be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney will depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic or metal liner. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing & it’s an approved liner for gas & oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue & steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture & flue gases in your chimney and keeps them out of your home.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your home is safer for yourself and your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick & mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. Liners provide a rightly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. The chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. An imperfectly-sized liner will lead to more creosote buildup in wood burning stoves & the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
Our goal is to provide recommendations that might improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance and venting system. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot & creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch might be removed. We employ numerous cleaning plans to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney requires to be addressed.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning practices that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot and creosote from entering the residence. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it’s impossible to sweep the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote & glaze deposits. These cases are seldom the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney could remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases could be either removed &replaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature proper to the class of the chimney service.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two visits – sometimes even 3 – if necessary. Our chimney technicians can usually be done in less couple of hours and could make sure your structure does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch job by doing a great job with minimal interruption to an owner.
