The chimney is one of the most useful elements of a home. The fact that chimneys can do their job fittingly, even when damaged, contributes to this idea that ‘it’s probably fine’. Chimneys are far from the quiet, passive black holes that are ‘just there’ that most customers assume them to be. Regular chimney maintenance is key to prevent issues, deterioration & future preventible, high-cost chimney repairs.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to imperfectly lined chimneys. Expressway repairs issues to all parts of your fireplace or chimney. Whether a homeowner needs a chimney repointing, chimney repairs to missing or loose bricks, repair of a leaking chimney crown, broken flue liner or other chimney problem. Water in the chimney also initiates rust in steel and cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts. Chimney caps have long been recognized as an important chimney safety and leak-prevention component. Installing chimney caps and dampers will protect your chimney & maintain a safe chimney damper. Our technicians only send fully-trained chimney cleaning fully-trained techs to your structure that may live up to the guidelines of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) & the NCSG (National Chimney Sweeps Guild), the two regulatory organizations for the chimney industry in the United States. For a metal, brick or fabricated chimney repair inspection call or text us at 631.388.7555.
One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that may prevent some of the most expensive trouble. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading & call us for an estimate now! Every chimney mason knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. The job of the chimney cap is to stop rain from entering the flue & to stop pests from building nests in your chimney or using the chimney for a doorway into your structure. Chimney caps also come with spark vents to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. Chimney dampers might help prevent water penetrations, heat loss and keep you warm and saving you money. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat & seals out weather, insects, birds and animals. Even just falling leaves can build up without the most apt chimney cap in place.
Rain is moisture & moisture is an enemy of a healthy fireplace & flue. Chimney liner tiles and mortar can crumble & crack leading to serious leaks. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests & leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, appropriate chimney cleaning and maintenance are still recommended annually.
We could be happy to come out and make a recommendation for you & provide a written estimate to install a new chimney cap, chimney damper or guard on your chimney. Water causes more issues than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and wears away at the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues will protect you from immoderate repairs. Chimneys can block proper ventilation and even enter your structure, potentially spreading disease & wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids might keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace might spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks might be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney could depend on the type of deposits. A flue lining in a masonry chimney is defined as “a clay, ceramic or metal liner. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing and it’s an approved liner for gas & oil. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue and steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner is air & water tight.
Stainless steel liners have been UL Tested under the most extreme conditions including multiple simulated chimney fires exceeding 2100F so you’ll sleep soundly at night knowing that your property is safer for yourself & your family. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick and mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. As the mortar joints erode, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles & dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide could leak into the living areas of the property. The chimney is responsible for not only allowing the products of combustion a passage out of the house, but the draft generated by the chimney also supplies the combustion air to the appliance. Our obvious task is to remove flue deposits & evaluate the total condition of the chimney system.
The required cleaning frequency may depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel and the burning habits of the client. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch will be removed. Our pros employ various cleaning practices to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of repairs.
Several of the most common chimney cleaning techniques that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot & creosote from entering the house. This type of cleaning is effective for soot and ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it is necessary to use chemicals that help loosen and dissolve heavy creosote & glaze deposits. These cases are almost never the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney should remove all of the soot, creosote and blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox & damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases could be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved product that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature exact to the class of the chimney service.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two trips – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney pros can usually be done in less couple of hours and will make sure your structure does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our pros pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch service by doing a great job with minimal interruption to you.
