The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted components of a structure. The chimney tends to not receive the attention or the concern usually given other alarming household systems. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather may be a potential safety hazard. Regular chimney maintenance is paramount to prevent issues, deterioration and future expensive, high-cost chimney repairs.
Each year there are thousands of cases of carbon monoxide poisonings due to shodily lined chimneys. Expressway repairs problems to all parts of your fireplace or chimney. Whether an owner wishes for a chimney repointing, chimney repairs to missing or loose bricks, repair of a leaking chimney crown, broken flue liner or other chimney complication. A stone chimney acts & seems to be like a brick chimney and it may also be protected from the effects of water penetration. Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a consumer will employ to prevent water penetration and leaks to the chimney. Defective mortar joints or the use of imperfect mortar or brick could greatly increase the tendency to absorb and guide water to the interior of the masonry chimney. Our pros only send fully-trained chimney cleaning fully-trained techs to your house that might live up to the guidelines of the CSIA (Chimney Safety Institute of America) & the NCSG (National Chimney Sweeps Guild), the two regulatory organizations for the chimney industry in the United States. For a metal, brick or fabricated chimney repair estimate call or text us at 631.388.7555.
One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that may prevent some of the most upscale problems. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call us for an estimate now! Every chimney mason knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. The job of the chimney cap is to stop rain from entering the flue & to stop pests from building nests in your chimney or using the chimney for a doorway into your home. Chimney caps also come with spark shields to prevent stray airborne particles that are still burning from exiting onto your roof. Chimney dampers may help prevent water penetrations, heat loss and keep you warm & saving you money. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat & seals out weather, insects, birds & animals. These blockages might cause fire hazards & smoke back drafting into the structure.
Metal fireboxes, liners and dampers all will suffer rust & deterioration. Chimney liner tiles & mortar might crumble and crack leading to serious issues. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain & the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. Of course, proper chimney cleaning & maintenance are still recommended annually.
Our masons will be happy to come out and make a recommendation for you & provide a written estimate to install a new chimney cap, chimney damper or guard on your chimney. Water initiates more harm than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks & eats away at the mortar. A chimney cap that covers all flues might protect you from costly repairs. Chimneys may block proper ventilation and even enter your home, potentially spreading disease & wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh and lids will keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace could spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks can be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a component of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney could depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. Thermocrete has undergone rigorous UL Listing & it is an approved liner for gas and oil. It conforms to any shape, size & length of the chimney and become a non-destructive chimney lining system which is corrosion-proof, flame and heat resistant, airtight liner with a rigidity of a steel. A stainless steel chimney liner is air and water tight.
This unique alloy is designed specifically to resist acids coming from gas appliances in the flue and extreme stresses of hot & cold cycles. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. Liners protect the masonry from the corrosive byproducts of combustion. The flue gases are acidic in nature and literally eat away at the mortar joints from inside the chimney. Liners provide a properly-sized flue for optimum efficiency of appliances. Modern wood stoves & gas or oil furnaces require a rightly-sized flue to perform precisely. Our obvious task is to remove flue deposits and evaluate the complete condition of the chimney system.
The required cleaning frequency will depend on amount of use, the type of installation, the type of fuel & the burning habits of the homeowner. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot and creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze more than 1/8 inch should be removed. We employ a variety of cleaning methods to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney inspections are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of repairs.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning methods that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot & creosote from entering the property. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it is impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen & dissolve heavy creosote & glaze deposits. These cases are almost never the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney can remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber & shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote and gases should be either removed andreplaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that could resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature necessary to the class of the chimney service.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two visits – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney pros may usually be done in less couple of hours and may make sure your residence does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our technicians pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch project by doing a great job with minimal interruption to you.
