The chimney is one of the most taken-for-granted features of a residence. The fact that chimneys can do their job perfectly, even when overlooked, contributes to this idea that ‘it’s probably fine’. A chimney deteriorated by constant exposure to the weather will be a potential safety hazard. Weather-damaged lining systems, flue obstructions and displaced masonry products all present a problem to residents.
Haphazardly lined chimneys will cause a number of upscale structural and cosmetic worries for the customer and also create potentially important safety hazards. Lots of masonry chimney products (except for genuine stone) suffer accelerated deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Water in the chimney also starts rust in steel & cast iron, weakening or destroying the metal parts. Chimney caps, also called rain covers, are probably the most inexpensive preventive measure that a customer can employ to prevent water penetration and harm to the chimney. Installing chimney caps and dampers can protect your chimney & maintain a safe chimney damper. Caps and dampers keep out the weather, all animals and most debris – all while keeping sparks from leaving the chimney which might ignite nearby combustibles like your roofing shingles, siding or nearby trees. One of the least expensive parts of the chimney venting system is the one that may prevent some of the most costly damage. If you don’t have a chimney cap on your chimney, stop reading and call us for an estimate now! Every chimney pro knows that a safe chimney cap is a must. Chimney caps come in all different varieties, shapes, sizes & materials. Some caps may actually help facilitate the updraft function of the chimney as well by virtue of their special design. With precision engineering this damper is easy to open and close. This damper attaches to the top of the chimney’s flue tile liner, providing a tight, gasketed fit that seals in heat & seals out weather, insects, birds and animals. Even just falling leaves may build up without a proper chimney cap in place.
Metal fireboxes, liners & dampers all could suffer rust and deterioration. Chimney liner tiles and mortar can crumble & crack leading to serious damage. The chimney cap cover deflects the rain and the side mesh areas prevent pests and leaves from entering the chimney. A correctly fitted chimney cap or guard may slow down wear-and-tear on your chimney and lining, potentially saving you from large repair costs.
Our chimney repair and installation experts are very knowledgeable about numerous types of chimney caps, guards and dampers. Water starts more damage than any other element. It soaks into porous bricks and erodes at the mortar. It’s such a common problem , raccoons, squirrels, birds and bats try to make their home in your chimney. Chimneys might block proper ventilation and even enter your home, potentially spreading disease and wreaking havoc. Our strong mesh & lids can keep even the most determined animals out! Your fireplace will spew sparks out into the environment, onto the roof or nearby flammable materials. Stray sparks will be stopped cold by the meshing cover that is a part of all of our chimney caps.
The method chosen or recommended for your chimney may depend on the type of deposits. The Thermocrete process coats the inside of the chimney from top to bottom with a highly durable ceramic sealant. A lining cleaning is cost-effective & the most optimal for your fireplace chimney & in chimneys serving gas, oil, wood or coal burning appliances. Composite chimney lining system that gets inflated into the chimney flue & steam pressure is added to harden the resin, turning it into hard composite liner. A stainless steel chimney liner locks in moisture & flue gases in your chimney and keeps them out of your house.
This unique alloy is designed specifically to resist acids coming from gas appliances in the flue and extreme stresses of hot and cold cycles. The liner protects the house from heat transfer to combustibles. In the NBS tests, unlined chimneys allowed heat to move through the chimney so rapidly that the adjacent woodwork caught fire in only 3 1/2 hours. In the tests, it was determined that if the flue gases were allowed to penetrate to the brick & mortar, the result would be a reduction in the usable life of the chimney. As the mortar joints wear away, heat transfers more rapidly to the nearby combustibles & dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide could leak into the living areas of the property. Modern wood stoves & gas or oil furnaces require a precisely-sized flue to perform precisely. An incorrectly-sized liner might lead to other creosote buildup in wood burning stoves and the production of carbon monoxide with conventional fuels.
Our duty is to provide recommendations that can improve the safety & efficiency of your appliance and venting system. Chimneys should be cleaned when accumulations of soot & creosote approach or exceed 1/4 inch. Accumulations of glaze in excess of 1/8 inch may be removed. Our masons employ a variety of cleaning systems to remove chimney deposits. Frequent (at least annual) chimney consultations are the only way to know when the chimney is in need of help.
Several of the normal chimney cleaning techniques that we provide follow:
Standard Sweep. This is the standard or normal cleaning method & involves the use of brushes to clean the flue. A powerful, well filtered vacuum is used to prevent soot & creosote from entering the residence. This type of cleaning is effective for soot & ordinary creosote deposits but has little effect on glaze deposits.
Mechanical Sweeping. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of wire brushes, plastic cables or special chains rotated at high speed by an electric motor. Mechanical cleaning is often employed to remove hard creosote or glaze deposits. In some cases where it’s impossible to clean the flue by standard or mechanical sweeping it’s necessary to use chemicals that help loosen & dissolve heavy creosote and glaze deposits. These cases are hardly ever the case – but necessary in some situations, a clean sweep of your chimney may remove all of the soot, creosote & blockages from your flue liner, smoke chamber and shelf, firebox and damper. Heat, moisture, creosote & gases could be either removed &replaced, repaired or relined with a listed liner system or other approved material that will resist corrosion, softening or cracking from flue gases at temperature proper to the class of the chimney project.
Chemical cleaning: This requires two trips – sometimes even three – if necessary. Our chimney technicians could usually be done in less couple of hours & will make sure your structure does not get soiled or messy around the areas worked in. Our experts pride ourselves on “no mess” top notch project by doing a great job with minimal interruption to an owner.
